[Waking up isn't a long and difficult process, so the longer this weird conversation goes on, the grumpier Okuyasu is going to be about being woken up in the middle of the fucking night. To wit, after a pause and more squinting up at him:]
You woke me up to give me a pillow? Man-- [Without any ceremony he disentangles an arm from the mess of blankets on the floor and reaches up to swat blandly at Josuke's face. Man.] seriously?
[Look... That was the best thing that came to mind at the time. Don't fault him for that. Josuke leans back just in time to dodge that super high energy swat. Except they keep coming so he has to actually pull one hand up to try and swat right back.]
It's a good question! My neck still hurts from sleeping down there last night!
[Since this has to do with pillows anyway, Josuke reaches back between swats to grab his own pillow and throw it down at Okuyasu's face.]
[Okay, it's on. Or it would be, if Okuyasu had it in him to do anything but get hit in the face with a pillow, lay there a second, then wrap his arms around it and roll away protectively. Good luck getting this one back, jerk.]
You're not doing it right, man. It's not bad down here.
[You know. Josuke especially did not think that one through and it seems like things aren't getting any better from here.
With the state of his hostage pillow the only option is to go on the offensive so Josuke pushes himself up and then off the bed to tackle Okuyasu, bringing half his cover along for the ride. Hopefully their room is far enough away from everyone else or a lot of people are getting woken up by idiot life choices in the middle of the night. He's not aiming to actually hurt while he wrestles for his pillow though. The actual aim might actually be to tickle Okuyasu enough that he releases his grip enough for it to be pulled away.
But he's a fucking teenage boy and this was a shitty idea so you do the math.]
[Noooo, you'll never take his prize! Okuyasu makes a sound that would be a full laugh if he were fully awake, holding tight onto the pillow and rolling again so that Josuke only bodyslams half of him.
In the middle of the night, which can't be emphasized enough.] Dude-!
[The blanket nest is more of a hot mess than usual after all this rolling and now Josuke dragging more stuff down with him, but Okuyasu still finds a way to smush the pillow he's claimed into Josuke's face. Then following that brilliant distraction, he wiggles away from cheating tickling hands and turns over again, to prop an elbow on the end of the pillow on Josuke's chest.
Nobody needs to be suffocated right now... but he's still winning. And the important realization kicks in in three, two...]
[It's so completely dumb and Josuke can't help but laugh when he gets Okuyasu, although not unaware like he hoped. The landing is rough, there's a lot of him and not a lot of space between this make-shift bed and the real one. He's celebrating avoiding whacking anything against the wooden frame when the air is knocked out of him mid-laugh by the offending pillow.
Josuke falls back, flailing a hand in front of him to try and avoid the inevitable, but he gets pinned. He pushes at the pillow so it falls to the side instead of covering his poor face and catches his breath. He's almost ready to push back and retaliate when reality hits. He was so caught up he almost forgot what caused it.
It's not the longest hesitation by far but it's there before he tries to twist away from Okuyasu and the pin, effectively wrapping his blanket around his legs in a horrible mess.]
's nothing, man. [Mumbled because they both know that won't fly so.] Just can't sleep is all. If I got to suffer so do you.
[Not the furthest from the truth. He was awake and wanted Okuyasu awake too.]
[There is a chance he'd believe this-- if Josuke were an asshole or if he didn't do this "haha it's okay" thing literally all the time. The look he gives Josuke is critical even in the dark, but he doesn't want to start another argument right now... Maybe he shouldn't push.
Blatantly. Not blatantly.]
Whatever. I bet I'll get back to sleep faster anyway.
[So there. He doesn't nudge Josuke to get back up on the bed or anything like that- on the contrary, he turns back over facing away from him, but drags an edge of the bed blanket with him. Oh, no. Is Josuke now stuck? Dang.
Annnd over his shoulder:]
You even get the bed and you can't sleep? For shame, Josuke.
[No matter how dark it may or may not be Okuyasu's criticism means nothing when Josuke is looking at the nothingness under the bed instead! He yanks the pillow off from his shoulder so it's no longer half covering him and thinks about climbing back onto the bed. But his cover has been commandeered now so he will talk about that instead.
He rolls over so he is staring at the back of Okuyasu's head. Hmmm...]
You're right. The floor is definitely where it's at tonight.
[It's so totally in even.
If there was any uncertainty to what he means he pulls some of his cover back so it covers more than one leg and snuggles against his reclaimed pillow.]
[Well. In fairness, that's the blanket from the bed, so Okuyasu doesn't need it back. There's no reason to roll over and pettily yank it back to his side of this - suddenly crowded - pile of bedding. So he stops at just rolling over again, to stare at the back of Josuke's head in turn, because that seems to be what they're doing now.
This guy...]
You're not gonna whine about how your room at home is sooo much better than this place again, are you?
[This is the game they are playing. The who can commit the dumbest bed sabotage in the middle of the night game. Josuke scrunches up his face at that comment because he hasn't complained that much.]
No! It's not that. [But what kind of room doesn't have its own mirror, really? He doesn't say it but his tone sure does. With a huff he blows a loose strand of hair out of his face.]
[He's complained enough. Okuyasu squints at him dubiously-- but no, a real and honest answer. Good! Well-- answering him is good, at least.
He doesn't really think about how Josuke's first response to a bad dream is to wake him up and then crawl into his blanket bed. That's so little kid of him, but okay...]
[Is that judgement? This is a judgement free zone even in these brackets. He's aware that waking up Okuyasu was completely childish, thanks. What's done is done though and now he is curled up in a blanket nest on the ground like the mature adult he is.
At that question Josuke elects to grumble something that sounds like a no, probably, instead of real words.]
Or go ahead and do it, but Okuyasu won't be deterred. He's pretty comfortable where he is without moving too much though, so he leans forward to lightly headbutt Josuke right there in the forehead. The lack of pomp right now is really convenient.]
[Josuke is ready to just let it go. Honestly, he was feeling better after messing around a bit and working through some of the nervous energy with all that movement. It was super self-indulgent as it was to steal half of his bed because of one stupid dream. So, he was going to just shut up finally but then he gets headbutt.
Seriously, Okuyasu?
It happens suddenly. One second he's point blank staring at the other's face and then he was tearing up. Oh god, oh no- Which could not be happening, this was not in the game plan. A hand shoots up and Josuke hastily wipes at his eyes because he is not going to fucking cry here. He refuses to. He looks down, hard to lean forward considering their close proximity, and sniffs loudly because there's nothing else happening because he's not crying.]
This is so fucking dumb.
[Stellar. He sounds great. This went so fucking well.]
[Oh- oh shit- Okuyasu didn't mean to open the floodgates here, honestly. Immediately he opens his mouth to say something, gives up on a concerned kind of grunt, and finds he can't do anything but stare for a moment.
It would be easier to hide the crying if they weren't very nearly stuck to each other right now. And Josuke definitely crying nudges uncomfortably at the back of his mind, like there's something inherently wrong with the concept and he needs to do something about it as soon as possible.
That at least doesn't take any thinking about- Okuyasu frees an arm from the blankets and wraps it around Josuke's shoulders. This works on him when he bursts into sloppy tears, so it's the obvious choice for what to do.]
Aw, dude. It's not dumb. [......] I mean, probably.
[How the tables have turned. The side hug is well received as much as Josuke ducking his head further down is a positive reaction.
Josuke doesn't mean to start a scene, honest. This is the last thing he wanted to happen. Now that it's started he can't stop though. He tries, breathing deeper to try and calm down, but at this point it would be better to just get it off his chest. This is already embarrassing enough that he might as well go the full nine yards.
He's speaking through his hand which is still covering his face.]
It is. It was that fight again.
[No elaboration only because he doesn't think it has to be said. He had cried like an idiot back then too when Okuyasu had finally stood back up. That should have been the end of it. He was alive and Kira hadn't taken another life it shouldn't be bothering him here.
It had to be this stupid room. The fact that he wasn't used to staying away from home for so long or something stupid like that. Maybe all the vague talk about how people didn't know when they would see each other again or the indeterminate stay before they could get home. All of it.
What if Okuyasu hadn't been there right away when he showed up? What if Okuyasu disappears again?]
Shouldn't have woken you up, sorry.
[No cool words about how Okuyasu should have told him he was getting up this time. Instead he's just feeling like an idiot for worrying over things that aren't even options happening.]
[That fight again. No explanation is needed; there's only one fight that ends in tears and feels heavy in Okuyasu's chest when he thinks about it. He doesn't much; it's in the past and resolved, he's here now, but occasionally the split-second awareness of having most of his middle removed gives him pause when he looks in the mirror and all of him is still there without a scratch. Josuke is really amazing.
And really upset. Last time Okuyasu shrugged it off and let him play it cool, but in the dark and alone in a strange city, without the adrenaline of a fight, Josuke crying kinda-sorta on his shoulder is a lot more real. He scoffs quietly - stop trying to be sorry - and shifts to get his other arm around Josuke now with only a little nudging at him to work with him, here.]
Man, fuck waking me up. I don't care about that.
[It's hard to find the right words to say at this point. About this thing. He's bad with words and better with actions, pulling Josuke closer to him for the sake of it and to let him hide his obvious crying more easily. It's the principle of the thing.]
... I'm okay. [None of that adrenaline-fueled bluster this time; just the plain words, quiet for only Josuke to hear even though they're utterly alone in this place.] And I'm staying right here. Okay?
[Josuke finally gives in. It's awkward considering he is still holding the pillow from before against his chest but he wiggles enough to get pulled into a hug, eventually choosing to throw the thing away entirely to bury his face against Okuyasu instead. With his face effectively hidden against his friend he's able to return the hug as well.
Maybe it was because they were completely alone rather than sitting in a public street surrounded by EMTs. Maybe it was because Okuyasu was being surprisingly chill about this. Either or Josuke finally sobs, no longer trying to hold back. Pour one out for whatever he wore to sleep because it's now Josuke's exclusive handkerchief.
It's only a short while later before he gets over the worst of it. After all, it's hard to stay distressed about your friend's near death experience when he can hear his heartbeat and feels his breathing directly.
But that didn't change the fact that he most definitely freaked Okuyasu out during that entire show. Everything inside him wanted to avoid being sappy or sentimental, find another way to reassure him that everything was fine. With no warning past calmer breathing he hooks a leg over Okuyasu and rolls until he has the other pinned under him.]
No shit, I'm not letting you go anywhere.
[Josuke props an elbow on Okuyasu's chest to prove his point. His cocky smile would probably be better served if his eyes weren't already red from crying.
He'd need to put ice on them this morning if they were still puffy.]
[Yes yes, snot on his shirt. That's fine, that's what he's here for. There won't be any objections out of Okuyasu, as he simply falls silent and lets Josuke get it all out. When it seems like Josuke is a little more calm he gives him a whole body squeeze, just for emphasis. A little punctuation mark to quietly reassure him that Okuyasu is serious.
And then he's suddenly pinned under Josuke and blinks up at him, like he's not sure how this just happened. He manages to hold onto him still, relaxing his grip but not letting go all the way so that he flops back onto the other, favored pillow. That can't be it, can it? Is this like the family stuff that's okay but not really okay? Or should Okuyasu trust in the look Josuke is giving him despite his reddened eyes and just go with it for now--they're both here and in one piece, so it must be alright.
He likes that one better.
After that brief pause he grins. Which can only bring good things.]
You look like shit.
[He means it nicely. He leaves one arm around Josuke but lets go with the other, squeezing it between them so he can reach up the very short distance to his friend's hair and brush the loose strands out of his face.]
[Yes, everything actually is good again. No lies or half truths this time. Not perfect, no, but he feels better than before and that counts for something. Josuke's heart soars when he sees Okuyasu smile back. Anything to skip embarrassing sentimental stuff was good in his books and going right back to being Okay was welcomed.
That doesn't stop him from scrunching up his nose at the comment. Looks like shit... Is it going to be obvious? Would people ask questions? This was totally bogus.]
Great...
[Josuke shakes his head back and forth, causing most of the hair to fall back into his face. He lifts a hand of his own to push it back over his forehead and with a sigh flattens himself on top of Okuyasu, shifting to face plant in the pillow right next to his bud. No one can see his beauty tarnished! Or he's just getting hit with a wave of exhaustion after fooling around for god knows how long.]
[Okay, in fairness. No one else is going to be looking at Josuke from this close. So it should be fine. Still, that doesn't stop Okuyasu from pursing his lips to muffle a laugh at Josuke's beauty dramatics. This guy...
He breaks that off with a half-hearted hey of objection, when Josuke messes his hair up again. He's in the process of trying to push it back into place himself again because dude don't be difficult when he's just flopped down on and - okay. So that's happening.]
Not total shit. You look like regular shit.
[Okuyasu: helping... Now that he can't push at hair though he does the next best thing, swiftly pinching the useless hairtie to pull it out of Josuke's hair completely and sticking his hand in to ruffle his hair before he gets fussed at for it. Worth it. Worth every second.
Jokes on Josuke, because this is the sentimental sappy stuff. It's good to be Okay.
Okuyasu even leaves his hand there, once he's wiggled his fingers a bit to make sure he didn't make a tangled mess in the back here.]
[Josuke is made to be difficult when it comes to things like appearances. Sorry, dude, this is what you signed up for in this friend.
Muffled into the pillow, because he sure isn't going to lift his head up, with so much totally real and not sarcastic sincerity:] Thanks a lot, man.
[He's ready to just stay an extra, unnecessarily heavy, blanket for Okuyasu until his hair starts getting attacked. The loss of the hair tie was actually not felt but mussing it very much tips him off. There's a very loud very indignant sound - right next to Okuyasu's ear, sorry - and he flails a hand up to swat at the offending hair wrecker.
Of course, the attack didn't last long and he stops his blind attack pretty quickly. He makes a point to clumsily run his fingers through his hair a few times, knocking into Okuyasu's hand while doing so, to check for knots but is appeased enough when there's nothing bad. And, well, since his hand is already up there on top of his head now he just leaves it there. On top of Okuyasu's.
He turns just enough to actually mitigate some of the pillow muffle but doesn't talk very loud considering that ear proximity.]
If my hair is messed up tomorrow you're gonna owe me.
[Wow okay, right in the ear. Okuyasu laughs at that reaction though, leaning his head away only for a second in case Josuke does it again. Still worth it.
He rolls his eyes at the other comment even though they're not positioned to make eye contact. Josuke, please...]
Whatever princess, you're still the prettiest.
[How sarcastic is that?? Who can say. Maybe Josuke really is the prettiest princess in the land.
But then there's Josuke's hand on his and Okuyasu forgets about fussing over his hair. It's weird that that's more significant suddenly than the other things happening but even with the comfortable weight of Josuke's whole body against his own, Okuyasu turns his head just slightly to look sideways at their hands.
That's probably not comfortable for Josuke, but he doesn't think about that. Josuke started it, anyway--so that's what it is.
So. Okuyasu makes a noise like he's just clearing his throat, shifting his shoulders a little to make a show of getting more comfortable and mussing Josuke's hair again, just a little - but that all is just pretense to take some attention off his clumsy effort to thread their fingers together. It's a lopsided hold for sure and he's left with a finger or two holding Josuke's hair instead, but.
Also totally worth it. Thinking too hard about this is better left for daylight. They're both okay and Okuyasu is happy--he's not going to mess with that.
He counts to three in his head, like if he can do that without anything bad happening it means this is fine, then speaks quietly up toward the ceiling.] You going to sleep yet?
[Pretty princess... Why this? Another grumble as Josuke pokes at Okuyasu's face with his free hand. The aim was probably his cheek but he still can't see anything so it's more likely his chin or nose. Whatever, his minor dislike of being teased has been shown. And he's not retracting that threat(?), if his hair is a rat's nest tomorrow he is going to do worse than cry.
Still, he's not getting up or moving away.
There's a second where he thinks the coughing and shuffling is a hint that he need to move his heavy ass off, causing Josuke to tense up just the slightest amount, but instead fingers twine with his. He shifts to bury his face completely in pillow again, hiding his face for more reasons than being a bit vain.]
Mmm... Yeah, I'm good.
[He says while laying on top of Okuyasu and not a real bed. There is some sympathy for not crushing him in the middle of the night, and it would be hard to maintain balance forever, so he shifts and slides off to one side. He doesn't go much further than that though and he's still more or less on top of him but, you know. It might be a bit awkward since he still has one leg thrown haphazardly over Okuyasu's legs too.
But that's not super important to think about right now.
Even though a normal person in this position would naturally be looking at their newly elected body pillow, Josuke manages to keep his face away somehow. He's going to smother himself at this rate. Even though they totally aren't holding hands he tugs them away from his head to sprawl somewhere more natural between them. Ahaha...]
[Okuyasu thinks for a moment that Josuke moving is Josuke leaving, and for those couple seconds he's ready to hit himself for totally screwing this one up. But no, he's still there, just getting comfortable. Cool. That's cool.
Josuke's going to smother himself but that's okay because Okuyasu's other arm is still around him and it's definitely going to be dead by morning - proper morning - and that's just fine. He'll just whine about it while Josuke's whining about his hair. They can get to those things when they happen, because... well.
Well. There's still the fact that Okuyasu isn't thinking ahead to the morning or ahead at all, with Josuke's hand still in his and the rest of him warm where they're still touching. Which reminds him to, incredibly subtly amidst all these coy touches, wiggle one leg out from under Josuke's so he can kick at one of the blankets until it's actually covering them instead of being a trampled mess. This works about as well as you'd expect, so not really at all but whatever, he tried.
And now he's going to stop moving already. He settles. Finally. This is cool, he's dealing with this as coolly as possible.]

Ahaha...]

He settles. Finally. This is cool, he's dealing with this as coolly as possible.]
... Yeah. Okay. [cool] Uh, g'night.
